J Bart Luttrell and the Relay Computer of 1964 Many of you have heard, and some continue to circulate, the strange story of the relay computer designed by some kid in our class. These stories, like all Peshak stories concocted by Doug Johnson when he placed fake news in the Skyrocket, just to see what he could get away with, are not true. It doesn’t help that Karl Sturmberg keeps referencing this stuff. There is no existential threat to life on the planet composed by a relay computer. Anyway, this stuff probably still keeps going because of the original StarTrek TV show, where some character talks to the ship’s computer, and it makes a lot of relay clicking noise, like an old Stroger switch box, for dial telephones, at the telephone company PBX, before it answers back in voice. You know that there wasn’t the compute power on the planet, at that time of that StarTrek tv show, to do that, right? Think of a terabyte memory made of relays. Wouldn’t fit in Wisconsin, even if you moved everything else out... This JB box wasn’t a crude digital computer, as billed. It was a box of mechanical parts that could become a crude digital state machine (but our teachers didn’t know what that was, and neither did I). One “programmed” this “computer” with little connecting wires. Wires had pins, box had sockets, Hundreds of them. This ain’t software, this is plug and play... One could, theoretically, build something like a controller for something like a three story elevator. JB’s challenge was: design and build one that worked right. He had a requirements specification. He also had one hell of a starting point for me. The “computer” was a box that contained a bunch of relays, each a coil of wire that, when energized, would pull normally open switches closed, and normally closed switches open. One of those switches could be connected with these plug and play wires such as to keep the coil energized once it got there. If so, that forms a memory bit (could be set to and would stay at a 0 or 1). These switches of these relays could be connected together with plug and play wires to form logical decisions, based on input bits states (manual switches positions) and remember those decisions, until told to forget them (by input bits changing). Those decisions could be such as energize (or not) a motor (that would turn a pointer (output)). This was JB’s existential threat to life box turned over to Peshak unsupervised. Input (manual switches), logic and memory (relays), and output (pointer, turned by a motor), with a power supply that wouldn’t electrocute high school kids. JB supplied a starting point. A circuit of plug and play wires that would form an elevator control “computer”. The pointer had floor number (1, 2, 3) for where the elevator should stop (remove power from the motor), at a floor. Each floor had an input button for request to come here then go up, and an input button for request to come here then go down. You couldn’t go down from 1 or up from 3 (only one input button on those two floors). It worked, but with a fault: if you were on floor 2 and wanted to go to floor 1, you had to go through the sequence 2, 3, 1. JB declared this a logical fault in the design. Think of the elevator in the down town bank building. I agreed. JB claimed that there were not enough logic elements to correct that design deficiency. I mentioned that I had some extra relays at my home shop that would pull with the power supply voltage available on this “computer”. JB had the urge to see if Peshak was just bragging, or had some stuff, called me on that. JB let me take the system home overnight on the bus, I brought it back the next day on the bus. All I needed to fix the design deficiency was a motor reversing relay. If state (floor #) and input (floor command switch), then move the motor to next desired next state; but don’t go up to go down, don’t go down to go up (use the extra motor reversing relay). Simple mod, Barry Jensen’s cat could probably figure this out... It was an arduous journey, with all the other kids on the bus wanting to pull wires loose. Same for the monkeys my math class when JB insisted that I explain this to the class and successfully demonstrate it. I had to protect this design from nefarious interlopers with unclean motives, every second. I also had to use the lavatory... I don’t suppose that somebody would know who relocated a few wires while I was so engaged for a brief period... What turned into terrible embarrassment that followed after the bell rang was short lived. My nemesis had only pulled wires, so there was no danger of a power supply short and fire, I could identify where the design had been sabotaged by the loose wires dangling. Got it working with only about 5 minutes of enduring class laughter that I will never forget, only allowed by sufficient patience of JB. JB wrote the reference letter that got me into the college of engineering at Madison. Apparently, some professor in mathematics there had claimed that this problem couldn’t be solved... Demonstrably, that math teacher at the university didn’t understand that DC motors will run backwards if you reverse the voltage polarity powering it. There are only two kinds of people in this world. Those that know how things work are called engineers. Those that don’t seem to want to have that title. Nobody wants to be called rocket scientist anymore. Even Wernher von Braun corrected everybody, rocket engineer... Don’t be afraid of what you don’t understand, try to learn something... And don’t put down those with ideas on how to improve. Might better your life...

If I had not moved to Sweden in 1960 after my fathers death, I would have graduated in 1966 at the Wausau High School. I went to Franklin Elementary during 1957-1960, from 4th to 6th grade. I am planning on coming to Wausau at the end of March this year (2017) and would very much like to meet old classmates who remember me. Sincerely, Anne Berg

Missed our 40th & 50th reunions; look forward to our 60th reunion in 2026. That’s assuming I’m fortunate enough to be there. With the possible exception of an extraterrestrial civilization viewing us from approximately 50.5 lightyears away, it’s difficult to surpass the intricacy of Blair Peshak’s reminiscence of our past. Our past has treated us well. Hope we may anticipate that in our future.

I still enjoy my work with the City of Madison, managing contracts for senior adult services and directing the Madison Senior Center. Visit me there, 330 West Mifflin St, a short (3 blk) walk from the Capitol. Unfortunately, my husband Fred Kauffeld is rehabing from a fall at a health care center and won't be able to join me at the 50TH. I expect to feel somewhat surreal seeing folks from a gap of 50 years. "How are you?" seems trivial from that perspective. But "don't regret growing older, it is a privilege denied to many," especially pertinent seeing our WHS friends in the memorial listing.

Dear All, A couple of classmates have requested an update on recent adventures in motion picture soundtrack composing. The movie title is "Nowhere Now, The Legend Of Joshua Tree". It was entered in three film festivals this last fall and winter and was rejected by all three. Apparently this movie is a real stinker. I was paid for my songs and my performance and I have never seen the finished film. Oh well... Far more exciting than any of that is the upcoming launch of my website. acmeartworksid.com. After two years of preparation it is ready to go in June 2007. It's a poorly concieved and badly socialized marketing experiment that 5 years from now should be an overnight success. If nothing else, it will be a lot of fun. See you all at number fifty. Michael

I'm working on the road now but, I'll be back at my studio in PS after the first of the year (2007). After that, if anybody feels like visiting, let me know. We'll nuke some burritos and there is always a bottle of frozen tequila in the freezer. So here's a toast, "Continue having great lives and I love you all-PROAST!" Michael Kleinschmidt

On June 8, our graduation was forty years ago, exactly. That day seemed a long time coming, but has receded all too quickly into the past. I remember a time in the early sixties when my mother helped organize her 20th Wausau reunion. Needless to say, I thought about that in 1986 when my wife, Pam, and I came from NY to attend our 20th. Now it’s forty. Tempus fugit. By the time of our 50th, I plan on being retired and living back in Wisconsin, probably Madison. I want to visit Wausau for that one. We were able to visit Wisconsin once this year. One of our daughters graduated from UW Madison in May. Another graduated from Chicago a couple of years ago. Daddy’s little bonus graduated from high school last month and will start college this fall. Our Long Island house resembles that of the Dutch painter, Jan Steen. The current menagerie includes two dogs, three cats and an iguana. Hope everyone has a great time on the 29th of July.

I am so proud to have come from Wausau High School and have looked forward to this reunion now for almost a year. Leo,who I married at 25, will be coming with me. Leo has put in alot of extra time to prepare another magican to replace him while we are gone. Finally I can write that we will be there. Leo has been the Resident Medium at the Magic Castle in Hollywood (MagicCastle.com) where he has hosted the Seance Room for 25 years. Ronald and Nancy Reagan attended one of Leo's seances. At 2 years old my daughter Tabitha sat on the bar at the Magic Castle and said prestidigitator to everyone's amazement. At 22 she was able to travel and entertain large audiences with Rudy Coby to many other countries including Italy, France, England, Monte Carlo, Singapore. If you would like maybe we can coax Leo into showing a few effects at the reunion!

Got to tour the old east highschool last summer, courtesy of the construction crew. For some reason, the airplane seems to fly up to Wausaw every year or two... Still pock marks in the rear wall of Harry Johnson's chemistry classroom from the corks with nails (demonstartion of gasoline volitility with a steel tube and spark plug). I still remember the whiff of carbon disulfide, followed by the four legs of my lab chair departing radially, followed by the drop. I still blame I think it was Bruce Maazer that relocated that demonstration, but they wanted me to pay for that chair! Still the acid drip marks in the ceiling of the classroom below. When he retired, did Harry really make toothpaste (or nitro) in his basement? Thought I heard a relay computer question from J. Bart Luttrell down in the math department (you had no idea what you wrought upon this planet when you let me do that), and I am still mad at whoever "relocated" a wire before the demonstration (or my amazement that I actually found it during the demonstration). I remember a "microwave" magnet that Jon Harkness got from someplace in Milwaukee, taking my it said it was stainless steel wristwatch off and putting it in my pocket so it wouldn't get damaged by that 40 pound magnet, brushing past the magnet and becomming "attached", the two football players they borrowed from Lowell Johnson to try to get me loose. There was no way I was going to take off my pants and walk down the halls (to get loose from that thing), and I couldn't carry it home, even on the bus... I'm not sure if it was Wausau, or Sputnik, but, for one very brief moment in history, in the middle of the frozen north, put aside were fears of litigation, and a really good educational institution formed up, for a little while. You remember the odeon resonator incident, right (we blanked out television on the east side of town, even the police radio stopped working, Harkness cowering in the corner of the fan room east of third floor study hall {Peshak, you turned it on, you go turn it off}, the "half lighted" florescent lights on the shoulder of the maintenance guy in study hall, the teacher screaming and running out, ...)? Well, what you didn't see was in the fan room, where the "happy hall of the 13" were being taken out by massive ozone, and the "helicopter blades" of lightning coming off that thing were looking for me.

Sometime leading up to this year's Superbowl "#40", it dawned on me that we graduated during the year of the first one. So, I said to myself, "there must be something happening here, but you don't know what it is...". Thanks to Turi, a classmate I knew how to reach, I was forwarded the correspondence she received. Granted, I've moved around a bit. But I haven't received any notifications since the 10 year reunion when I "intervened" at the Rothschild Pavilion by replacing the "boom box" with a sound booth operator who activated the overhead roller rink speakers, making it a "dance". Here at the website I checked the "unfound classmate list" and I wasn't there. Then the "classmate memoriam", not there yet! So I dusted off the '66 yearbook to see if I appeared. Sure enough, right there on page 21 next to my name. Guess I'm still around! So, my wife, Katherine, and I will be driving from our ranch in the mountains of Western Wyoming, just southeast of Jackson Hole, to attend the reunion. I am looking forward to catching up.

I'll come if I can be assured I'm not the only one who has gotten larger since graduation. Much larger. Sally Day (married 34 years, grandmother of two)

I think there should be a way for classmates to submit present photos, old photos (of interest), and profiles about each as submitted by the classmates.
